Hello! Today I’m a stop on the Altenew Artists’ Gouache – Strolling Through New York Release Blog Hop! I really enjoyed playing with these gorgeous opaque paints and I pushed myself out of my comfort zone for today’s project!
I stamped the Winter Crocus onto dark navy blue cardstock with white pigment ink to use as a reference for my painting. Then I painted one section at a time allowing the paint to dry completely before coloring a touching section. Unlike watercolors I didn’t want the paint colors to mix and blend. This wasn’t the fastest card I’ve ever created but I really enjoyed the time I spent carefully painting each segment. The gouache is rich and creamy and a little goes a very long way when you’re working!
I finished my card by adding a foiled sentiment and some splatters of white paint to give the illusion of the crocus popping up through the last of the winter snow! There are 12 bright and vibrant colors in the Strolling Through New York collection and you can find the color swatches here.
You should have arrived from the Altenew blog and Virginia Lu is your next stop! Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the hop!

I love the intensity of your crocus and the background!
Lovely card, and the love the vibrant colours
Such a pretty card! The colors are so vibrant. Love the white “snow” too!
Dear Jessica
As always it is a treat to see the works of art u present. Thanks for the same. I have never used gouache. but would love to try it. But the sad part is that crafty stuff is heavily taxed in Sri Lanka as the country is bancrupt. tc stay safe and blessed
Oh my goodness, that is absolutely gorgeous Jess! What inspiration!
Love the purple on black! Color looks so rich and smootg.
A winter floral! I had no idea there was a ‘winter crocus’. Love the color palette here and the detail with the layers. Excellent use of the medium.
Love the purple against the dark blue background and snow flurries. Very pretty.
i’m a huge purple fan so this card really pleases my soul! thank you!!
OMG, the snow over these flowers are AMAZING!!
Thanks for the inspiration of using a dark background!
Love your card. What a spectacular color scheme
Like you I tend to stay away from the dark backgrounds but I love your card. It does look like the crocuses are braving the early darkness of a late winter storm. So very pretty.
Your card is lovely. The colors are so vivid.
Your card is beautiful! I enjoy painting, but don’t do it a lot. I think stamping the image with out wonderful stamps, then painting them is such a great idea for the artist in us! Your colors are fabulous, and the way the paints stand out on a dark background is amazing, so different than watercolors, which I also enjoy using.
stunning card
