Good morning! I am so excited to help Altenew celebrate their fourth anniversary today! They’re having FOUR days of blog hops with lots of exciting prizes from Altenew and their exciting sponsors! You can find all the giveaways details at the bottom of my post! Today I decided to play with my alcohol inks to create a birthday card with a moody color palette!
I started by dropping alcohol ink blending solution onto a piece of heavyweight yupo paper. I’ve found that heavyweight paper is the best for heat-embossing. Yupo paper is technically plastic so it warps easily if you apply too much heat but the heavyweight definitely takes heat better. You can find more of my tricks for heat-embossing on yupo here! I used alcohol inks in currant, eggplant, wild plum, and cool peri. I really love the combination of those dark moody colors! I used a few drops of alcohol ink blending solution to get the alcohol ink moving and used my air puffer to blend the colors together. I let it dry completely and then stamped the Arabesque Medallion twice with versamark before heat-embossing it with gold tinsel embossing powder. I deliberately positioned the stamp to follow the lines of the alcohol ink.
I trimmed the yupo paper down and adhered it to a white card base. Then I stamped the greeting from Birthday Builder onto gold cardstock and heat-embossed it with black embossing powder. I trimmed it down and added a strip of black cardstock beneath the gold and then adhered it to my card with foam mounting tape. I love the combination of those colors with gold and black!
Since it’s Altenew‘s Anniversary I decided to share a small gallery of cards I’ve created over the years using stamps and dies from Altenew! They’ve been one of my favorite companies from the very beginning and I am honored to be a stop on the hop today!

I love the art deco feel of this! Such a clever use of the alcohol inks underneath the stamp- my alcohol inks barely see airtime, but you’ve got me re-thinking that. Thanks for inspiring!

WOW!! What a unique way to design a card — putting the alcohol ink down then placing the stamp image — so clever and very lovely. I loved looking at all your other cards also. Very pretty designs!

Thanks for help in learning how you emboss on Yupo paper! Your card is just amazing – it look like richly colored stained glass! Thanks for sharing in the blog hop today. Happy Birthday, Altenew!

Gorgeous alcohol inking! I love the embossing over top!
Gail Plaskiewicz says
I love your card! It looks so different from things I have seen. I don’t own any alcohol ink and yeah, that’s so bad for me, isn’t it? LOL I love how they look on your card but have never known how to use them or if I even needed them. Now I am thinking maybe I need to get some and do what you did. I’ve also never heard of that Yupo paper either. I am amazed at what can be done with card making and how many different things people do that I had no clue I could even do never mind that I ever thought of. Your many cards that you showed us are so pretty and creative and colorful and thank you for showing them to us. Thank you also for giving us the chance to win something.
Karen Rice says
How cool!!! I love learning something new–your card is stunning!
Angie Hall says
Thanks for the tips about yupo paper. Your card is stunning. I think adding the black strip behind the gold sentiment was genius. I’ll have to try that one myself.
Annalisa says
What a gorgeous combo of colors. No wonder it’s one of your favorites! And I love how you matched up the edge of the medallion with the edges of the inks. It’s all just so cohesive and gorgeous. I kind of want pillows that look like that in my room now. Thanks for sharing not only this card, but some of your other Altenew cards! I love seeing what designers pick to share as some of their favorites.
