I LOVE IT! Seriously, I couldn’t be any happier with the way it turned out!
I’ve been anxiously awaiting my front door. Like dreaming about it every night for the past few weeks…like trying to sketch it out (and boy do I suck at drawing!)…like endlessly googling and ‘houzz’ing (is that a word?) for similar set-ups. I loved the concept of what I had chosen but couldn’t really picture it in my mind. I mean, I had a vague idea of what it should look like but really, it was a total leap of faith moment.
And I don’t regret it one bit! I think it really makes the split-foyer look less boxy and less like a typical split-foyer. I tend towards asymmetry in general and the door/window set-up is SO VERY me! The sidelight will help bring a little more light to the foyer while the over-sized transom window will bring a ton of natural light into the foyer and living room and I’ve got the perfect chandelier to fill that space (more to come on that saga later!)!
Just for comparison, here is a photo of our home with the 8′ door, 2′ transom window and single sidelight next to the house being built next door that has a standard 6’8″ door, double sidelight, and semi-circular transom. Of course, the build next door is missing the landing steps at the moment so I think it looks even more awkward at the moment…but still, ours is totally the winner, don’tcha think?
Anyway, now that I’ve got that out of my system…off to bed. Maybe tonight I’ll finally stop dreaming about the front door and switch back to the kitchen island! Ha!

Jessica, those front steps mean you’ll be carrying the harp UP and DOWN stairs? Tell me that ain’t so! Is there a downstairs entryway that will avoid that strenuous activity? Gotta think about your shoulders and the harp. Beautiful house…and it’s going up rapidly…now for the inside work. Can’t wait to see your music room.

Shirley, no no, not at all! All my harp stuff will take place downstairs and there’s an entrance through the garage! That’s actually why we chose a split-foyer design…so there would be no harp carrying up or down stairs!
