Hello! Today is release day for Ellen Hutson and we’ve got a huge hop filled with lots of inspiration using the new holiday release! I’m sharing three ways to use coverplate dies to create a trio of quick cards perfect for the holiday season! I have a video for my cards that you can watch below or over at my Youtube channel!
The Twirling Flurries and Birch Tree coverplate dies are a great addition to your craft stash and can be used for a variety of occasions!
I love how a simple change in techniques takes these dies from modern to elegant to whimsical!
My first card took me less than 5 minutes to create and most of that time was spent adhering the card together! I die-cut the Twirling Flurries and Birch Tree coverplate dies from white cardstock and layered them together on a white card base for a simple design. The detail in both coverplate dies gives the plain white background plenty of interest. Then I added the Deer Couple die-cut from gold and silver glitter cardstock and then heat-embossed the sentiment from Love and Light with gold and silver embossing powder to finish the card! Super simple but elegant and a great candidate for mass-production!
My second card is a modern design that also makes great use of cardstock scraps! I chose an autumn palette of rich golds, oranges, and purples and trimmed scraps of cardstock into strips of varying widths. Next I adhered them to a card base and then trimmed off the overhang. I heat-embossed a sentiment from ‘Tis the Season in gold on the beautiful Birch Tree coverplate die die-cut from black cardstock. Finally, I added a shadow layer die-cut from gold glitter cardstock and then adhered it to my cardstock panel! You could easily change up this design for different seasons by using different colors and sentiments!
My final card uses a little ink blending and a spooky surprise! I die-cut the Twirling Flurries coverplate die from strathmore bristol cardstock and blended distress oxide inks over the panel to create my Halloween sky. I used distress oxide inks in scattered straw, mustard seed, wilted violet, blueprint sketch, chipped sapphire, and black soot. When I was done blending I splattered the panel with water, shimmer spray, and metallic gold paint and let it dry.
Next I die-cut the Birch Tree coverplate die from black cardstock and added a sentiment from Halloween Magic heat-embossed in gold embossing powder. I also heat-embossed the spider from Halloween Magic onto black cardstock with silver embossing powder and die-cut it with the coordinating die. Then I adhered a small piece of clear monafilament string to the spider and then adhered that to the birch tree panel. This allows the spider to move just a tiny bit…almost in a way that makes you take a second look at the card and wonder if you imagined the movement! 😉
Finally, in case you missed it, I had this card over on the Ellen Hutson blog a few days ago using the new release and sharing three ways to make your Christmas cards sparkle! I use Sparkly Christmas and Merry Little Christmas and some of my favorite sparkly tools! 😉
And that’s it for me! I hope this gives you some ideas for how to use your coverplate dies and I’d love to know which one was your favorite!
